That's why I said Home Depot is to a large extent protected from the www threat. People often need things in a hurry, and nobody is going to buy a 4X8 plywood sheet on line. However, not everything fits into this category and for many items the internet is so much more efficient that regular retailers won't be able to compete. Tools are a good example - it's difficult for a single store to stock a really wide range of types and quality, and most ship well. Most of the tools at your local Home Depot are fair quality at best, and try to find a 6-48 tap. HD has great dominance on the streets, but it has no real presence in the shopping mall of the future, on-line. Personally, I think HD should figure out what parts of their business are best suited for on line selling, and make several specialized www sites for these. An example might be something like homedepottools.com or homedepotgarden etc.
I'm very impressed with HD in general. Where I live their prices are almost always higher than Wal Mart for similar items but they still manage to sell a lot of them.

I agree that the web is not the best place to buy most of what HD sells. When I wanted OSB, I want it today and it isn't going to come UPS.

I want to buy a new compound miter saw, but need to see several models to compare. Can't do that on the web. Hands on experience and talking to someone who knows about them is the way I will buy. So I am waiting until HD opens their new store here in 9 days. Yippee.
