Johannes--- I am not a hunter, but I certainly have no interest in preventing hunting. To me, survival skills mean being good at hailing a cab on Broadway (I am), or knowing where to get good pastrami in the Theater District (the Stage). But it is a deeply ingrained ritual for some people, and you make it sound great :-)... Anything for which one can adduce reasons (assuming they are not absurd) is ipso facto not arbitrary, even if the matter cannot be brought to a conclusion... If the matter rested solely on the Ancestory claim, I would have no ambivalence, but would simply say to the tribe "go, team, go". But I think that we show a respect to higher order animals that indicates our respect for ourselves, and the traits that we prize, which is the basis for feeling queasy about hunting apes and cetaceans...
