Applied Materials is expected to report second-quarter results after the
close. ABN AMRO analyst David Wu says he's expecting a reasonably good
report from the company. The consensus estimate is for earnings per
share of 27 cents, compared to 37 cents a year ago. But all eyes will be
on the company's bookings. Wu says he expects the company to report $1.4
billion to $1.5 billion in bookings. Likewise, Merrill Lynch analyst
Mark FitzGerald expects impressive results. "We estimate AMAT will
report record or close to record bookings during its second quarter
conference call," he said in a report. "Our current forecast calls for
bookings between $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion, greater than the
previous record of $1.37 billion booked in the October 1997 quarter."
