There is no interest in imposing speech restrictions. If you knew me, you would find that I am one of the most rabid free-speech advocates around.

But there IS an interest in keeping the discussion somewhat related to the topic of the thread. If people choose to post messages about Israel, or UFOs, or abortion, or the strengths and weaknesses of the candiates for assistant treasurer of Orange County, on this thread they have that ability, and no one is able to prevent it. (Posting off topic is not, apparently, a violation of the SI terms of use.) A few off-topic posts don't bother most people, and certainly don't bother me. But politeness and a certain appreciation of order suggest, I think, that when people get into extended discussions of topics which have nothing to do with the posted topic, they start a new thread (or find a more appropriate existing thread) to move their discussion to. Not only it it more polite to those who want to discuss the posted topic, but it will be more likely to enable others who would be interested in their discussion to join in -- after all, what posters interested in the Israeli elections would think to look on this thread for insight? I didn't object to the early messages on that topic. However, after a lengthy series of posts on Israel, I made what I believe was a politely worded request or suggestion to move the discussion elsewhere. If people choose to ignore it and continue to keep posting off-topic messages, that says more about them and their respect for the rights of others than it does about me.
