Tendências: Brazil's trade balance surplus at US$2bn

Tendências consultancy company projects Brazil's trade balance surplus
for 1999 at no more than US$2bn. According to Tendências, the country's
trade balance could even close out the year with a surplus corresponding
to half that amount or, in a rather more pessimistic estimate, a small
deficit.
Analysts to Tendências believe that the Brazilian government made a
mistake as it announced it intended to achieve a surplus of US$6bn,
after predicting a positive result of as much as US$11bn. To reach that
goal, the government was expecting to see a recovery in the
international prices of commodities, which correspond to 30% the total
of Brazilian exports. "The government has overestimated the prices,"
economist Fábio Silveira said.

In 1998, Brazil's trade balance posted a deficit of US$6.4bn. (By Rita
