Analysts expect film to gross $1 billion worldwide

HOLLYWOOD (CBS.MW) -- The expected success of the new "Star Wars" film
should boost shares of Fox Entertainment Group this month and add as much as $100
million to the company's corporate coffers, analysts said.

Fox (FOX: news, msgs), spun off from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. last November,
is the distributor of "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" but does not own the
film. George Lucas' own production company, Lucasfilm, has that honor.

Still, Salomon Smith Barney analyst Jill Krutick estimates that if the film grosses $1
billion worldwide -- a projection she referred to in a research note as "conservative" --
Fox could pick up $100 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and
amortization (EBITDA). She said that take would add about 10 cents per share to its
bottom line in fiscal 2000, which begins July 1.

Krutick said she expects Fox Entertainment to earn about $1.2 billion before interest
and taxes in its current fiscal year.

Jessica Reif Cohen of Merrill Lynch said the studio could reap "well over" $100 million
over the span of "a few years." Dennis Leibowitz, an analyst at Donaldson, Lufkin &
Jenrette, has similar expectations, according to his assistant.

Krutick and Cohen said Fox's stock could begin to climb soon after the film's May 19
release. The shares closed at 29 Friday, down 1/2.

BT Alex. Brown's Drew Marcus said that the biggest benefit to Fox from 'Star Wars' is
that "it should strengthen Fox's relationships with exhibitors and could help with future
video sales of Fox's other 'Star Wars' library titles." Those titles include "Star Wars"
(1977), "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Return of the Jedi" (1983).

Wholly owned Fox films in current release include "Entrapment," starring Sean Connery
and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and "Never Been Kissed," with Drew Barrymore.

"Entrapment" has raked in $38.4 million in the two weeks since its release, while
"Kissed" has taken in $40.5 million in five weeks.

Planned summer releases from Fox include "BrokeDown Palace," a drama starring
Claire Danes and Bill Pullman; "The Fight Club," a Brad Pitt drama; "Lake Placid," a
horror comedy featuring Pullman and Bridget Fonda; and "Next to You," a comedy
starring TV's Melissa Joan Hart.
