EchoStar Communications Corp (DISH) In a conference call following the announcement of ECHOSTAR COMMUNICATIONS CORP's 1Q results, Chief Executive Charlie Ergen late Monday said that it makes sense for EchoStar to share programming with satellite TV rival DirecTV, a unit of HUGHES ELECTRONICS. If legislation allowing retransmission of local TV signals is passed, one company could retransmit the local signals from, say, metro Denver while customers of both companies received them. That type of sharing, for local signals or other non-core programming, would free up more bandwidth for both companies and make them more competitive with cable TV, Ergen said. (Dow Jones)
