>i just think MD mislead with his recent statements about
>analysts possibly being "overjoyed" or whatever his word was.

No he didn't. He basically said he could not predict if
they would be "overjoyed" or not. Now that I see the results,
I see why. He has shown he can crank up the revs, hurting
EPS growth (this quarter) or that he can aim for higher
margins/EPS, hurting the revs (last quarter).

So, depending on which of those two items (revs vs. EPS) is more
important, people are either overjoyed (41% rev gr) or not (EPS).
He said he found it hard to predict the reactions of others,
which I think we all realize is an impossible task in any area
of life.

Granola:

As I said earlier, despite my fears, I held over earnings because I believed in MD to come through. I was very close to selling at 44 at the close and did not hit the send button. Oh, well. I will drink a beer and see how the CC goes and hope for an open tomorrow in the 42-43 range. I hope MD knows where the stock is trading right now and will talk his little heart out. I am too troubled to think right now. I feel like Eliot's "patient etherised upon a table."

reMichael DELL misled
I am sorry to say I have to agree with you: he was much too enthusiastic: he would have been more honest to say "We are doing great, amazing growth for such a large company, but investors will probably not be happy to see that we dont exceed the high expectations set on us, anymore."
Oh well.
(At least I wouldnt have calls then...VVVBG)

GR: Good gut feeling, wish I had the same instincts! However, I disagree with you about MD misleading us. If I remember correctly, (1)he advised analyst NOT to increase their estimates; (2) he has been saying for some time now that investors will have to come to accept growth under 50% and (3)his statement about being "overjoyed" came about as follows: Question: "Well, will investors be overjoyed at the numbers this quarter or just pleased?" Answer: "Let's wait until earnings are out then we will see if investors are "overjoyed" or just happy with results". The question was nearly akin to "Have you stopped beating your wife?" If he answered "no, I don't think they will be overjoyed" or "yes, they will" he gets skewered.

The days of 50+% growth are over, and not surprisingly for a company the size of Dell. I'll take 40+% for the shares in my core holdings, but I'll need to find another trading stock! Cheers and aloha.

granola..re: "msd misled"...

interesting comment..agree totally, seems like msd has forgotten how to play the p.t. barnum game with the analysts...like platt and gerstner are..msd has tremendous fundamentals that he can key on..but silence makes the stock grow flounder....

Granola - I can't fault his answer, given the questions and the extemporaneous nature of the interview. But he had time to "clarify", and should have.
