NDS tools to ensure that US cable boxes are "open"................ CableLabs Selects NDS Test Technology As Part Of The OpenCable Set Top Box Interoperability Process BUSINESS WIRE NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1999--NDS, today announces that it has signed an agreement to develop test tools for Cable Television Laboratories, Inc (CableLabs(R)) that will enable OpenCable(tm) to insure interoperability between set top boxes (STB) and of Point of Deployment (POD) security modules. This agreement will mean that the growing number of consumer electronics vendors who are manufacturing OpenCable set top boxes will be able to take advantage of these tools to ensure proper and swift integration. "Working with CableLabs, the only body presently able to ensure compliance with the OpenCable POD specifications, is great recognition for our technology," said Dr Dov Rubin, vice president and general manager of NDS Americas. "Our participation in the OpenCable initiative, and our introduction of the first conditional access POD, are a good springboard for our ambitions in the American cable market. We look forward to being able to help American cable companies make the most of their digital future in an open and competitive conditional access environment, offering lower costs, better security and advanced services such as interactivity and electronic shopping." The test tools being developed by NDS Ltd., include, PackEdit, ScriptGen and Playback components. PackEdit generates the packets compliant to the NRSS-B syntax required for removable security modules and generates program guide and scheduling information in accordance with the standard service information structures. ScriptGen creates NRSS-B scenarios based on the packets generated by PackEdit. Playback executes these test scripts and sends the relevant packets to encoding equipment. "Testing and certifying the confirmation to OpenCable POD standards will allow the proliferation of the next generation of open and interoperable digital boxes in the retail market," said Carmi Bogot, Director of New Conditional Access Initiatives. "We are pleased to be playing a part in ratifying the OpenCable standards, which will not only give consumers greater confidence, but also provide consumer electronics manufacturers with a blueprint for advanced set top boxes and allow them to migrate OpenCable functionality into other devices, such as VCRs, DVD players and personal computers." CableLabs is a research and development consortium of cable television system operators representing the continents of North America and South America. CableLabs plans and funds research and development projects that will help cable companies take advantage of future opportunities and meet future challenges in the cable television industry. OpenCable is a fast-track initiative of the cable television industry being managed through CableLabs with a goal of attaining interoperable digital set top boxes manufactured by multiple vendors. These devices will be capable of delivering digital video, data and interactive services to a television set. The OpenCable initiative has a number of components, as follows: -- the processes that define the advanced digital devices, including set top boxes -- a blueprint for a way of delivering a series of advanced services to consumers -- a family of cable digital devices -- a consumer brand.
