H.263+ is everywhere in disguise: RealNetworks, Microsoft Netshow(*) MPEG-4 codec, Intel's video codec are really built around H.263+.
It is hard to beat the quality of the H.263+ collection of coding tools, not to mention blocking intellectual property.

The proprietary stuff is little tweaks to the video codec (such as Intel's frame rate interpolation) and the "systems" layer. Ironic that all these seemingly proprietary bitstreams is really the same stuff.

The next wave should incorporate many-frame affine prediction mode, which represents up to 40% improvement.

Beyond that, the next big step will be synthetic natural hybrid coders, also known as parametric coders or 3-D mesh/object coders.

Note (*): No longer called "Netshow". Microsoft has changed the name yet again. Brain can't keep track.
