A lot of the network appliance companies I've been following are using Linux.

However, for hand-held or consumer appliances, the GUI OS will always be the winner, unless the device is powered by hardware controls (which could hide the complexities of a non-GUI OS.) Real-time isn't quite as critical here.

I don't know which OS the set-top boxes are using at this moment. But I was of the impression the AOL announcement was a push away from the Win OS. Although, this decision appears to be driven by business reasons (i.e. AOL vs. MS), possibly not a design driven decision.
