Cisco to add MPLS to IOS

By JIM DUFFY
Network World, 05/18/99

Cisco Systems yesterday
said it will ship
Multiprotocol Label
Switching (MPLS) software in a new
version of its IOS routing code in July.

Cisco will also ship Version 1.0 of the
Cisco Service Management System in
August. CSM will enable service
providers to manage virtual private
networks configured with MPLS-labeled
paths.

Version 12.05 of IOS will contain MPLS,
an IETF standard for engineering traffic
on IP and ATM networks. MPLS is
intended to bring connection-oriented
properties to connectionless IP networks
so packets can be switched instead of
routed, and scalability can be enhanced.

VPNs are considered the "killer app" for
MPLS because unique VPNs can be
labeled and steered through the network
by service providers using MPLS,
keeping the traffic and its service
qualities distinct from other Internet or
public IP data.

Cisco IOS 12.05 with MPLS runs on
Cisco routers and ATM switches. Cisco
claims IOS 12.05 can support tens of
thousands of VPNs.

CSM 1.0 will enable service providers to
configure, provision, manage and bill for
MPLS-labeled VPNs. This software costs
from $250,000 to $750,000, depending
on the size of the service provider's
network.
