CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1999--

CardTech/SecurTech '99 Gala Banquet Awards Honors the Singapore LAN Transport Association and the Chicago O'Hare International Airport for Innovative Practical Uses of Smart Card and Biometric Technology

CardTech/SecurTech '99 drew over 10,000 visitors and over 300 exhibitors to a wide-ranging group of seminars, discussions and displays showcasing the latest developments in smart cards and biometric identification systems. Two awards were given at the conference, the Outstanding Smart Card Award presented by the Smart Card Industry Association (SCIA) and the Larry Linden Innovative Security Application Award presented by CardTech/SecurTech.
The Outstanding Smart Card Award, given by SCIA, honored the Singapore LAN Transport Association for the Association's use of contactless smart card technology for an electronic toll road for passengers.
The City of Chicago's Aviation Commissioner, Mary Rose Loney, accepted the Larry Linden Innovative Security Technology Application award for the Chicago O'Hare International Airport' s Universal Air Cargo Security Access System. The system, as explained by Loney, combines both smart cards and biometrics for use in authenticating truck drivers via their fingerprints when they deliver cargo to the airport. The system uses smart card technology supplied by Schlumberger and biometric identification supplied by Identix.
Smart cards are credit card sized computers that are providing a myriad of services to millions of users around the world. They can hold electronic money and secured identification that allows users to do everything from conduct e-commerce transactions, to receive government benefits, to have controlled access to secure areas and more.
Biometric identification systems certify the identity of individuals based on unique biometric information that can be a fingerprint, a face, the iris of the eye or even the way in which a person's hand holds a pen and moves when signing a name.
CardTech/SecurTech '99, the world's largest conference and exhibition covering card and security technology, was held at Chicago's McCormick South Convention Center from May 11 to 14.
CardTech/SecurTech (CTST), founded in 1991, is the world's most comprehensive conference and exhibition covering advanced smart card and security technology. Purchased by Faulkner & Gray, Inc., publisher of Card Technology, ID World and Smart Card Alert, CTST focuses on applications of card and related technology solutions for banking, the Internet, telecommunications, mass transit, security, retail, loyalty, government and health care. Information about the organization, sponsors, program topics and exhibition can be found at www.ctst.com.
