Paul - "350 MHz Kmart 62 - now only $52!
400 MHz Kmart 62 - now only $76 !"

Do you think AMD is selling product below marginal cost?

Re: AMD's pricing

Looking at the data (with your witty product descriptions and exclamation points):

350 MHz Kmart 62 - now only $52!
400 MHz Kmart 62 - now only $76 !
450 MHz Kmart 62 - now only $107!
475 MHz Kmart 62 - now only $164!
400 MHz Kmart 63 - now only $184!
450 MHz Kmart 63 - now only $223!

one thing jumps out - if, as all reports indicate, yields have moved up at all speed grades, and if AMD's MPU ASP was $78 for 1Q, doesn't the price data mandate higher ASP for 2Q?

It's quite apparent that AMD's pricing continues to decline for each part type. But that's hardly news. I have a harder time with opening the NY Times this morning and seeing ValueAmerica advertising a Proteva PIII 450MHz system for $799 and a relatively loaded 500MHz system for $999 (both without monitors). Cough up another $300 and you get a PIII at 550MHz.

These are not Celeron systems, but are based on parts that according to some of the INTC unit estimates we've seen represent the heart of the INTC product line. As such, they represent a trend that has deeper implications deserving much more serious discussion than some of the trash-talking that is offered by the zealots on both sides of the AMD-INTC split on this thread. - Tad LaFountain
