Nord,...Thanks again for mostly presenting solid hard facts and not just attacking the messenger for voicing some caveats. You probably missed the February 12, 1999 Kodak Press Release where they said, "Kodak intends to withdraw from plans to launch a standalone digital minilab...". They are joining with Noritsu in a new QSS-2711DSL Minilab. Hopefully they are still going to use Spectrum's Detroit Board, but there will probably be some slippage in the schedule:

Kodak and Noritsu Produce New Digital Minilab System
Kodak is working with Noritsu Koki Ltd, the world's largest minilab manufacturer, by providing digital imaging expertise for the new Noritsu QSS-2711DLS which is set to benefit retail photofinishers and consumers alike. This move involving these two industry leaders heralds a new era in minilab design and capability. Under the new agreement, Kodak will become a key component and system supplier for the new Noritsu QSS-2711DLS digital lab system.

The new system combines the digital technology of both companies to provide retailers with the ability to offer consumers better pictures and more choices than ever before from a single minilab. This next generation digital minilab system will produce D&P orders more efficiently, deliver new and exciting digital products and services that consumers really want, and provide a long-term pathway for developing their retail digital imaging business and profit potential.

Kodak will supply the following components for the Noritsu QSS-2711DLS:

High speed and high quality film scanner which can handle 1900 images an hour at 1000 x 1500 pixel resolution
Proprietary Kodak operating system and application software. This comes pre-installed and provides simple point-and-click operation controlled by a Windows computer. The start-up package provides a range of capabilities including automatic features and additional manual enhancement features to produce better photos e.g. sharpening, contrast, dust and scratch removal and red-eye removal
Seamless connectivity to other Kodak products such as the Kodak Picture Maker
Licensing for retailers to produce Kodak branded output products such as Kodak Picture CD, Kodak Picture Disk and easy access to Kodak PhotoNet online, a digital imaging network service which lets consumers share their pictures with friends and family across Europe using the Internet.
Noritsu will provide the high performance printer and paper processor the benefits of which include:

High resolution printing at 400 dpi for superior image quality
Prints onto standard silver halide paper which is more cost effective than other digital minilabs which require special paper
High speed printing with throughput of 1250 prints per hour (89mm x 127mm)
Unique Micro Light Valve Array (MLVA) technology is employed in the print engine for high quality prints
"Both retailers and consumers will benefit from this powerful combination of Kodak marketing and technology with Noritsu engineering expertise," said Bharat Shah, Kodak's Director and General Manager, Consumer Imaging. "Consumers will get better photos in a wide range of sizes and media and experience exciting new ways to enjoy digital photography. Retailers will be able to provide their customers with new options and services that are significantly more appealing than prints created using traditional photofinishing. By offering these new products and services, they can drive increased traffic and larger orders whilst giving their business a competitive edge in the high street."

Commenting on behalf of Noritsu Koki Ltd. in the UK, Shuji Okada, Managing Director, Noritsu UK Ltd, said, "It makes sense for everyone that Noritsu is to employ Kodak's continually advancing imaging technologies in our new QSS-2711DLS lab system. As the world's largest minilab manufacturer, Noritsu can quickly spread the technology through existing efficient channels."

The Noritsu QSS-2711DLS will be available in the UK later this year. The price will be the subject of a further announcement. Kodak intends to withdraw from plans to launch a standalone Kodak digital minilab and focus instead on rapid expansion of the Noritsu QSS-2711DLS.

Kodak is a trade mark
The PhotoNet trademark is solely registered to Picture Vision, Inc.
