Neocon, a fresh attempt at resolving this.... First, I'd like to better get a hold of Concrete Abstract. Yes, they are personality types. The abstract thinking you refer to is a mental action. An example: when my wife and I breeze past a billboard, she will notice the graphics, and I will notice the text. Text is an abstract; pictures are [more] real. I simply notice the abstract of all that reality presents itself to me. I look for patterns. Others don't. [They look for feelings, or presence, or I really don't know.] This is an innate part of me, possibly including in innate the 3-year infant period, and some minor role until puberty. --This is what I meant by innate and innate and developmental. The typing I refer to could have an analogy with colors. Some people first notice things yellow in color; some first notice blue. This orientation is very fundamental with obscure origin. There is a heavy bias toward Abstracts in our culture. Enforced training in seeing as a Concrete is minor. Spelling. Interestingly, in our poor, rural, farm, southern hamlet. Teaching is a pleasure because all the kids follow the rules. On the other hand, Spelling is the only subject parents care about their kids progress. Any college bound get there on a football scholarship. Yes, there is nature and nurture doing double time here. Education and maturity combine to enhance abstract thinking. All achieve abstract thought, simply by maturing. The innate [sic] trait of intelligence is separate and collaborative, both. Separately, intelligence can bring a concrete better, higher abstract thought. But this thinking takes initial and sustained effort. Their thoughts, no matter how high, tend to be discrete. Without that effort, and the breaks, an abstract can tie his thoughts into systems better. Intelligent abstracts are doing what they want to do and what they are good at. Unfortunately, it is rare for both those to be present in a person who has the Concrete maturation equivalent. [A topic unexplored.] The absent minded professor results. Got to take a break, myself.
