How can so many believe it is possible to fix the price of near every vitamin in the world higher when (even those that understand the term "short") can not believe gold price could be manipulated lower?

Were we not told just a year ago "no large scale conspiracy or price manipulation could exist in the greater international market place"? How about the "fact" we've been told conspiracy and price manipulation can not exist in something as large as the gold market? Well, the market cap of these guys is far greater than the entire gold market:
U.S., Drug Firms, in Talks to Settle Conspiracy Case, WSJ Says

Washington, May 19 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. federal prosecutors are in settlement talks with major drug and chemical companies over allegations that they conspired to fix vitamin prices around the world, the Wall Street Journal Europe reported, citing people close to the investigation. BASF AG, Roche Holding AG and Rhone-Poulenc SA, as well as several smaller U.S. and Japanese firms have been the focus of a year-long investigation, the WSJ said. The possible settlement, which could be announced within days, could involve huge fines, the newspaper reported.
Merck & Co., Glaxo-Wellcome Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and 14 other drug companies will give away $148 million worth of products in California over the next three years to settle allegations they conspired to fix the price of prescription brand-name drugs.
