Insight and Compaq Team Up With "Beat Dell" Pricing

Just received an e-mailed advertisement from Insight with details of a partnership between Insight & Compaq. Compaq is now offering "Configure-To-Order PC'S" with "Selection and Prices That Beat Dell"..
this is part of Compaq's "new Partner Direct Program" ...

Well, they say imitation is the highest form of flattery. Obviously Compaq isn't capable of originality & this is their attempt to "beat Dell"...

I don't see this as any serious threat though personally for the following reasons:

1. Offering to built to order is different from being able to follow
up & follow through in a timely manner- Dell does, but can Compaq?

2. Building & selling a machine is only one part of the strategy-
A successful company must be able to stand behind the product they
sell. Compaq has a terrible reputation for poor custumer support
whereas Dell is probably the most highly regarded in this aspect.

3. Inventory Control: Dell dosen't stockpile inventory, therefore does
not have to "eat" outdated parts- Unless Compaq changes their way
of doing business radically they will still be behind the power
curve vs the Dell business model- and I don't believe they could
have developed strategic inititives with suppliers to drop ship
vs warehouse parts this quickly, so I believe their bottom line
will suffer on this aspect still.

Any thoughts?
