That's a good question, Ken. A kid walks into the doctor's office accompanied by his mother, nose running, warm to the touch, sneezing and coughing profusely. The mother asks the doctor, "So, Doc... what's wrong with Johnny?" The doctor answers, "I think he's catching the flu." Seat of the pants, no lengthy tests taken, the doctor acts on past observations and makes some intuitive calls. Heuristics at play, in grand form. He prescribes and antibiotic and chicken soup.
