CSCO appears to have a different strategy in the core...one which appears to be bearing fruit already. Change the playing field.

Now THAT'S Cisco arrogance! Cant play the game by the rules so we change the game. Bow down everybody, CSCO wants to change the game plan for it's 'New World' pipe dream.

Gary,<My point was to demonstrate that CSCO's decision to
terminate development on the TGX (ATM-IP switch) might have been a calculated
strategic decision to shift the market. This goes back to my comment earlier about
changing the playing field.>

We can only speculate, at least offically on the thread, about real reason to terminate ATM/IP switch.
You may not be aware that British Telecom for example, is very serious about ATM/IP. If you have good sources go and check out the vendors position at BT as well as BT/ATT alliance.
I am not going to elaborate this here.
One again, integration of ATM/IP is extremely important for carriers.

Another options is to have core terabit router, which can transport IP traffic and ATM cells!!!, but you need ATM/IP adge switch( the best case is when the same platform-box and manager can be used in core and edge)to manage traffic from the core to customers.

You will be surprise in the next few moths about progress in this field, I mean terabit router, extremely scaleable with
IP/ATM which work in the real network, plus security, managment, billing etc.,entire newtork.
What sells is not box, entire well integrated network. Right?

We will talk about this in the next few months.

Regards
Zbyslaw

I have a qualm about this statement. Cisco has said, time and time again, that it will not decide where technology is going. It will take what the customers want and provide them with the solution. Perhaps this is what you were referring to with this statement, but at first glance, it appears that you are stating that CSCO is now deciding where technology is going. Similarly, I listened to the Q&A last night from the CC and I did pick up the comment by JC in which he said they halted the development of the switch (TGX, right?) after talking to their customers and sensing that maybe that wasn't what they wanted.

Anyway, keep up the posts!!

A so-so day today in SLO, a little cloudy ;)

Justin
