Johannes, I thought that I would throw in Immanuel Kant. According to Kant, our moral sense precedes our belief in God. A motive for the rational belief in God is that we see that the moral law is not wholly vindicated in this life, and therefore postulate a Just Judge and immortality to adjudicate matters.
