The #2 home equity lender behind Associates First Capital, it originates, buys, sells, and services home equity loans for borrowers with poor credit. Its ContiMortgage division buys wholesale loans and originates retail home equity loans nationwide. Other units make commercial real estate and subprime auto loans. ContiFinancial Services and ContiTrade provide asset securitization structuring and placement services to other loan originators. The company is cutting staff and taking other measures to improve performance. Agribusiness giant Continental Grain owns 77% of the company.
