Could this be the Japanese strength Morgan referred to in the CC? Fujitsu rolls 0.18-micron process By Brian Fuller EE Times (05/18/99, 7:40 p.m. EDT) SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Fujitsu Microelectronics (FMI) turned the crank on its process technology Tuesday, unveiling a 0.18-micron generation that claims three times the performance of the quarter-micron generation at a third the power. The CS81 and CE81 series, announced at FMI's annual press and analysts luncheon here, will be available next month, with engineering samples coming in July. Production is expected in October 1999, FMI officials said. The CS81 standard cell and CE81 cell array pushes FMI's density reach to 22 million and 25 million gates respectively. The 40ps gate delay of the 0.18-micron process is twice as fast as FMI's earlier CE71/CS71 family. The CE series draws 20nW/MHz of power per gate, while the CS family claims per-gate power dissipation of 15nW/MHz. The new process comes just seven months after FMI unveiled a quarter-micron ASIC/embedded DRAM process. The push is key to near-term growth for Fujitsu, which has spent the last year scrambling away from commodity memories and focusing more on system-on-chip ASIC designs. Yuji "Gene" Ezura, FMI's president and chief executive, told reporters and analysts Tuesday that the company's ASIC revenues jumped 67 percent last year. For Fujitsu Ltd., business also is looking up, Ezura noted. Preliminary sales figures for fiscal 98, which ended March 31, show $38.9 billion in revenues, up from $37.8 billion the year before. Final fiscal numbers are scheduled to be released May 25. eetimes.com
