Providian Shares Fall After Report of Investigation by DA
San Francisco, May 19 (Bloomberg) -- Providian Financial Corp., the biggest U.S. issuer of credit cards to consumers with tarnished credit records, fell as much as 9.8 percent after a newspaper reported that the San Francisco district attorney's office is investigating it for possible consumer fraud.

Providian, fell 10 1/8 to 114 in midday trading of 2.3 million shares, more than double its six-month daily average volume. Earlier, it touched 112. The stock had gained 66 percent this year before today's fall.

San Francisco-based Providian is under investigation for practices including the way it markets credit cards, discloses their terms and collects debt, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, quoting a spokesman for the district attorney's office. ''If the district attorney's office is conducting an investigation we'll cooperate fully, said Laurie Cole, a Providian spokeswoman. ''We're confident we're in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.''

The district attorney's office and the Oakland, California, Better Business Bureau received numerous complaints from Providian customers about allegedly deceptive credit-card solicitations and payments not being posted on time, the Chronicle reported.
