Here is a partial explanation of the future profit center in IP Telephony. To access the full interview please go to www.iptelephony.org/frame/pulse/packetcable What follows is taken from that interview. " The PacketCable structure, picturing a stack diagram, is broken down into three layers. The bottom layer, the core transport layer, is the DOCSIS 1.1 local access network connected to a managed, private IP backbone.
The second layer is for core services consisting of a wide range of real-time applications such as telephony, gaming, and videoconferencing. It has quality of service and security specifications and billing interfaces, network management and provisioning.
The third layer or top layer, called the application layer, is where the IP telephony specific protocols reside, which includes the codecs we are specifying, the call signaling and the PSTN interconnection."
Wow! I love this technology and the possibilities.
