Michael,

True, I believe that even the USA defaulted in the 1860's or so. My point was that while everything is speculative to some extent, it is not intellectually honest to club all investments (equity vs. options, for example) as having similar levels of risk.

I can't remember where I found it, but there was an article I posted once that said that in the old days sovereign debt was actually considered lower-grade than corporate debt.
