Watch 50 sites pop up like this in the next 2 weeks. And how many will have multimillion dollar backing from MSFT, Excite (hence broadband from ATHM and AT&T), Intel, etc.? You or I can put one up for free but nobody will come. Everybody knows what is going on here. We are in the middle of a gold rush to the internet. The first guys there get the best mines: 1) People have their brains branded for categories. 2) People don't like more than one item per category - takes too many gray cells. 3) Ask 100 people where to go to for flea market and they all will say ebay (not Yahoo or others that are also rans). 4) Ask average people where to buy books - Amazon and maybe Barnes&Noble comes up - nobody else. 5) Ask about search engines and only about 3 or 4 come up. Ask Where do you go for medical advice? and you get a blank stare. It is a unoccupied space. Nobody has branded it yet. WebMD is perfect for this. Look at the site. You can find fault but it is better than any other I have seen for this topic. Ques: Where will they make their money? Ans: Ads for drugs, doctors, HMO subscriptions, literature, etc etc Of course this will only have appeal for humans that get sick. At last count we had 375 million of them in the USA alone. This is a pure internet play to a broad audience with deep backing. Maybe MSFT, AT&T, Intel and the others are just stupid with their money but I think I will go along with them.
