Barnes & Noble, Staples, Home Depot, Price Costco.

Let's go back to the original challenge:

>>give me ONE company that totally dominates a PROFITABLE segment of ANY INDUSTRY, where there is LITTLE TO NO BARRIER TO ENTRY

1) First let's deal with Barriers to entry. Do you know the value of the land owned by the companies that you mentioned? They've got huge upfront costs to build all those superstores.

2) Yes, as a rule, big superstores are squeezing out the little guy. But they always will face competition from other big superstores. Borders competes with Barnes and Noble. Office Max competes with Staples. Price Club competes with Costco. Home Depot is doing pretty good, but they haven't knocked out smaller stores by any means, especially since home improvement requires a lot of service.
As a matter of fact, none of the stores you mentioned dominate in any sense of say, more than 50% of sales in that product category.

I. MOTHER'S DAY SALES DELIGHT RETAILERS. Customer traffic was brisk. The
average ticket price was up. And cash registers were ringing like it was
Christmas this past Mother's Day, jewelers said. In a National Jeweler post-
Mother's Day spot check, retailers, representing a total of 106 stores
nationwide, said Mother's Day sales were up 5% to 15%. These increases, however,
were not a one-shot deal, but reflective of the type of year jewelers are
having, they said.
