1) It's just one part of the story.

2) Well, it's a fact of present day investment life, and will probably be so for the next 10+ years.

3) Do you have a productivity metric, or this is another of your gut feelings which I am supposed to accept at face value (regardless of what official estimates say) to avoid being lynched in PM by your admirers? :-)

As for speculative activity, you mean like poot buying? :-)
