AMD will not be benefited from buying S3 nor get some green money having those patents that S3 got. This is because AMD and Intel has some onging IP sharing rights. I have heard "rumors" that AMD had rights to Slot 1 long ago but opted to going with Socket 7. At the time, Slot 1 market was too small when K6 was being re-designed after purchasing it from Nexgen. Should AMD decided to go with Slot 1, I am sure Intel will come out with Slot "X" and kill off Slot 1. AMD had to make a decision in time for the tape out of K6. The result is the more mature Socket 7.
