Internet conference held in Beijing

THE '99 China Internet Conference and Exhibition was inaugurated yesterday in Beijing.

"With the globalization of the economy and the fast development of telecommunications and the information industry, the Internet will be one of the most important infrastructures in the 21st century," said Wu Jichuan, minister of the Ministry of Information Industry.

"To promote the expansion of Internet is a global issue," said Wu at the opening ceremony yesterday, adding that China's information industry will gradually open to the outside world and introduce more foreign investment.

This is the first such kind of activities hosted by the Ministry of Information Industry since its establishment last year.

Sources from the ministry say the event aims at making public relevant policies, strengthening co-operation with world-renowned IT firms and therefore promote the growth of China's IT industry.

A large number of hot topics will be discussed during the three-day event including Internet in China, IP phones, electronic commerce, network security, distance learning and the Year 2000 computer problem.

More than 40 IT manufacturers from home and abroad were attracted to the event including Legend, Bell (Shanghai) Co, Great Dragon Telecommunications Co, Intel, IBM, Nokia, Ericsson, AT&T and Hewlett-Packard.

Many representatives from international organizations such as the International Internet Association, International Telecommunications Union and Asian-Pacific Network Information Centre are also attending the event.

China already hosted two similar Internet conferences in 1995 and 1997.

I hope you guys don't mind, this is almost off topic as it is Chinese related but it is not Internet related.

This company is very interesting, very promising and just released a PR that I believe its potential revenue will be unlimited.

The company is PWTC, check out its PR:

biz.yahoo.com

Interesting part of the PR:

(''China has 1.2 billion people and an economy that has been growing at almost 10
percent a year over the past 18 years.
Power Technology's unique battery technology not only radically transforms the
affordability of mass transportation for China's average citizen, but can become
imminently competitive in both commercial and industrial sectors as well,'' stated Mr.
Philip Liu, President of Aniche, Inc.)

Also:

(''Moreover, considering the expense of the automobile as a means of personal
transportation, the bicycle is considered one of the top three items on every Chinese
household's shopping list. This grants Power Technology and its Chinese partners a
mass market for the electric bicycle".

Mr. Lee Balak, President of Power Technology, Inc., stated: ''China's urban population
already considers the electric bicycle
the ideal means of transportation for daily commuters. Since we have resolved the
inefficiencies of current battery technologies,
the electric bicycle stands to gain rapid acceptance as a real alternative to standard
bicycles, motorcycles and automobiles.'')

OV notes: This company is just starting to catch attention, its patented new technology
is going to make it a blue chip within few month.
Just a view coming from an Electrical Engineer.

Xin Net Corp., Formerly Placer TechnologiesInc., Makes Announcement

May 21, 1999 08:58 AM
VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1999--Further to the announcement of April 23, 1999 Xin Net Corp. XNET wishes to announce that Xin Hai, Xin Net's subsidiary in China, has an office now open for business in Shanghai.

The office has a staff of 15 including a team of 8 sales people. Sales and promotion have already started. Shanghai is the largest city in China with a population of 14 million as well as the country's leading financial and business center.

It is the headquarter location of choice for many foreign companies. The city is currently competing with Hong Kong to host a Disney theme park for the Greater China region. Together with Beijing and Guangzhou, Shanghai is one of the top three Internet markets in China. Xin Net is now represented in two of the three markets.

In a Financial Post article dated May 20, 1999, Legend Holdings has stated that it has reoriented its corporate strategy to put the Internet at the centre of all its product development, marketing and design. With over US$ 1 Billion in revenue, Legend is China's largest computer-maker.

Liu Chuanzhi, Legend chairman and chief executive says that they would develop a series of brand-name products such as workstations, servers, palm-sized computers and digital household appliances, all designed for the Chinese-language Internet.

Legend agreed in March to co-operate with Microsoft Corp. to make Internet access available to tens of millions of Chinese who have a television but cannot afford a personal computer.

Legend will sell "set-top" boxes fitted with Microsoft 's Venus software, enabling people to access the Internet using their televisions. This will open up the existing 320 million television sets in China to be potential Internet users.

Xin Hai is an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Internet Content Provider (ICP) that has more than 22,000 subscribers. Xin Hai is currently offering a "flea market" E-Commerce product to its subscribers with over 10,000 items offered for sale.

An expanded service will be made available shortly. After Shanghai, the next location is Taiyuan (populations 8 million); a license has already been granted for the city. License applications for several other cities are also underway.

For the year ended December 31, 1998, Xin Hai reported an audited Net Income of US$106,638 from Internet operations in China. As a result of the US$5.5 million financing, Xin Net is now aggressively seeking to expand its subscriber base and Internet services. Its current staff of 65 is expected to increase significantly as the business grows.

Forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties including, but not limited to, economical and political factors, developments of the Chinese Internet market, and changes in regulatory matters. Xin Net disclaims any obligation to update any such factors or to publicly announce results of any revision to the forward-looking statements contained herein to reflect future events or developments.

Frank,

What's is your opinion as to the actual (financial/business) impact of delayed WTO and strained relations with the USA on XNET's expansion? My China internet index was down another 3%, but my USA internet index was down another 6% so it seems that the down turn is just a general internet slump I'm actually surprised the Chinese stocks haven't been hit harder with the raft of bad news. My last reading of the news is that congress will go along with extending NTR for another year but resumption of WTO talks may have to wait until later in the summer.

Thanks for any thoughts. GR
