Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York, a "National Historic Landmark Destination Resort." Very pricey indeed, but if you can suggest Disneyworld, which can't be cheap, I can link to Mohonk... and Mohonk is so pleasant that Isaac Asimov dedicated a book to his three favorite places, Paris, New York and Mohonk Mountain House. It's has lots of gazebos strung along the steep path up to a tower at the top of the mountain, they hang out over gorgeous abysses and you can sit in them. Rock climbers go there and scale steep cliffs and hang out over the abysses, too. The very high price does include all meals and an afternoon tea and cookies in the Victorian parlor and bizarre evening entertainment. Like clog dancers, a bell ringing consort, a slide show on gardening to attract butterflies, a travelog of Latvia, a whistling contest, awkward multicultural acrobats, that sort of thing. Only recently did they start serving liquor and get phones in the rooms. There is a library with comfortable chairs. There are no televisions in the rooms, though there is a set in a room off the parlor. There is a specific balcony on which guests gather to watch and comment upon sunsets. They offer horseback rides at some ungodly hour of the morning to a remote area where they give you pancakes. There are outdoor sunrise prayer services at a place the old German masseuse leads you to. They have great children's programs, including lakeside late evening ghost stories for children that adults are said to attend. I wouldn't know for sure. At certain times of the year, people appear in the turrets and blow trumpets for some reason. There's a building containing extremely old agricultural implements. There are many dusty botanical specimens in glass fronted cases. There are portraits of ancestors and many photographs of Japan in the late 19th century, mysteriously. Also ancient pictures of famous guests, including vice presidents. In cold weather, there are fires in all the fireplaces. It is very stodgy. Here's a picture of Mohonk, and a link to the exorbitant rates.mohonk.com
