Having been around this thread for a looong time (since Voodoo 1) I have seen all the arguments come and go in cycles. Would people pay $250 for an add-in 3D card? (That's what the Voodoo 1 cost me) Will Voodoo 2 survive without 2D functionality? Who in their right mind would sacrifice 2 PCI slots just to play 3D games?

3dfx has defied them all!! (sound church bells and maniacal laughter)

Last year though I think they finally got impatient with the constraints and vulnerability of being just the chip maker (bit like Chip's parents feel <g>) and decided to broaden their horizons. They have long stated that they wanted to go this route and they look to be making good on their intentions. I think we are seeing hints of what business will be like at 3dfx in the nearish future (fingers crossed) with the Talon deal (pre-cursor to their own all-in-one MoBo?) and the 3500 TV. I love that remote connector puck on the 3500 TV. These people have some good ideas that go beyond bringing 3D to the masses.

Nvidia has the edge when it comes to haveing 32bit ext. rendering and large textures but they are a ways behind in their business model. They seem to execute well and have all the OEMs they need but 3dfx have a cleaner model now that they don't have to negotiate with board makers to get their product to market and, they are better positioned for growth. If 3dfx's next product has everything in terms of speed & the technology where will Nvidia's edge come from? If 3dfx can make more money by providing the same/similar product (assuming 50/50 market share) and launch new products faster, they win. If 3dfx can grow into other multi-media markets that will provide some protection from fluctuations that Nvidia doesn't have.

That's what I'm talking about.
