Responding to your suggestion, CPQ/AV has all the prerequisites for a world-class ISP. I understand that AV has a profitable "peering centre" in California, and am told that this is a centre which is able to monitor and re-direct a lot of the world-wide internet traffic. To gain popularity an AV, ISP would need to add to the bundle of services we already know about (Shopping.com, zip2, AV Photo and Media Finder, Bablefish and so on) so that it betters AOL/and the others. It has to have chat rooms and message boards, stock quotes etc and not rely on MSFT for Hotmail.com

The AltaVista.com or .net address could serve as the ISP address for those who were paid or free subscribers, and it could also take them directly to AV, the search engine. AltaVista.com could still be the search engine address for those not subscribed to an AV ISP.
