Narcotics are absolutely famous for itching.
Trust me, I know.

Whilst in the hospital I scratched myself so badly I bled. Of course I didn't know this because of the narcotics I was on but it was an interesting surprise when I got home. My friends thought the doctor had a seizure with the scalpel in his hand prior to surgery...

Itching is very common and is a side effect but not an allergic reaction. If the itching is accompanied by a rash, fever or swelling it is probably an allergic reaction.

However, you are absolutely right that a doctor should always be contacted when such symptoms occur
