Pal, even if Dell were to give a free pc for a 2 year internet contract, I'm not so sure its a good deal. Typically, an IP goes for 19.95 per month. Over 24 months, this comes to 478.80. You can't make any money on this kind of arrangement. The cost of the pc, plus to IP service, etc. all need to be accounted for. No way would 478 result in any meaningful profit. I'm starting to believe that someone is smoking something. This industry is going nuts. JMO

Paul,
I think there may be a future in "giving away" PC's in exchange for Internet connection. This opens many avenues for additional revenues, to start with the computer to be given away is a bare bones model, how many people will pay for additional capabilities and features? Second, with Dell's market penetration the Internet portal could be a huge hub for internet commerce. I'm not sure if Dell needs Lycos, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have already invested a significant resources developing this concept.
