ARTISOFT UPDATE: Shares of telephone software developer Artisoft (ASFT:
news, msgs) rose 13.8 percent Wednesday and 20 percent Tuesday with
scarcely a word from the company. Or maybe not. We've learned the
company's CEO, T. Paul Thomas, has been making the rounds in California,
talking up prospects for telephony products for small and mid-sized
businesses. "We saw the products, and some of them allow companies
unbelievable flexibility when it comes to identifying callers, or sending
greetings to specific users," said Gary Shemano of investment firm The
Shemano Group in San Francisco. Shemano said Thomas sees Artisoft, a
Massachusetts company, turning a profit later this year. Artisoft, whose
products include one called Visual Voice, lost $580,000 in its most recent
quarter on sales of $5.8 million. The stock closed at 4 5/8 Wednesday, up
9/16.
