LTCM's mathematical models failed them because you can't program a computer to estimate what the bid would be on securities in the portfolio should the entire world undergo a lapse in confidence. VAR would neet to be tinkered with for quite some time in order to ready the fund for a recurrence of such turmoil. Additionally, the psychological profiles of September's irritated & bewildered CMBS market makers won't be available for download for at least another year.
