Where do you think dragonflies and mayflies come from? Dragonfly larvae are underwater demons with huge swinging-door jaws -- and mayflies emerge in huge hatches that swamp their predators. Any trout fisherman can tell you that.

They actually have a nymph form which is a concatenated larval and pupal form. The nymph is long lived and metamorphoses prior to its final molt into a dragonfly. The adult has a lifespan much greater than 1 day in any case.
