Valley fever = San Joaquin Fever = Coccidioidomyocosis

a fungal disease --- primary acute , benign, self-limiting, progressive, chronic, often fatal (50-60%) disease of skin, lymph nodes, spleen, bones, meninges, brain (a defining disease of AIDs).
Really bad news! Most people get by the primary w/o treatment.
An excellent reason not to live in California.

It's an infection caused by a fungus that lives in the dry soil out here. Infects the lung, and can look like cancer or TB. Mark has an especially tenacious case. Not responding to the usual drugs, and surgery didn't help much. He has chronic pain from it.

It's hard to say how he caught it, it may have been from dust stirred up during one of the earthquakes.
