Re: "If a reader wanted to make an unreasonable estimate, that's certainly his or her prerogative, but I don't understand why someone would want to be that biased for the point of the exercise. Maybe I'm missing something."

You're missing the fact that Paul's brain was removed and replaced with Intel inside back in the days of 286, leaving him an underpowered, MMX-less version of Homer Simpson. <GG>

Tad,

P.S. to Scumbria - How's that for being condescending?

Paul's position and style is quite well defined and understood. However, I view you as a more objective source. So I was a little disappointed when you chose to "downgrade" this central issue of Intel's costs.

I have many years of experience in the microprocessor business, and have a keen understanding that a company has to sell microprocessors at a much higher price than their "cost" to be profitable.

Tad, Re: Actually, what's missing is the cute little "Intel Inside" logo from the ad. How could that be?

The 5600s has been on their WEB since K6-III is released. That
could mean they can have volume now.

Tad - Re: "- I guess the folks at CPQ are missing out on the incredibly disappearing K-6 III, since they dropped a bundle today to run a nearly-full page ad in the Circuits section of the NY Times featuring the Presario 5600s at 400 and 450MHz"

Maybe COMPAQ needs that ad to help unload their unsold inventory.
