Gateway Telecom Selects Industry Leader Newbridge Networks for LMDS Deployment
Newbridge Broadband Wireless Access Solution Garners Fourth U.S. LMDS Win
HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1999--Broadband wireless industry leader Newbridge Networks (NYSE:NN - news; TSE:NNC - news) today announced that it has been selected as the strategic networking vendor for the implementation of a local multipoint distribution service (LMDS) network by Gateway Telecom, LLC.

Gateway Telecom is an emerging full-service competitive carrier and LMDS license holder. Commercial services are slated to commence in October, 1999.

LMDS, a high frequency broadband wireless system operating in the 28 GHz spectrum, can be quickly deployed to cost-effectively deliver data, Internet, voice, video and multimedia services using point-to-multipoint distribution systems. The Newbridge(r) broadband wireless access solution for LMDS enables Gateway Telecom to enter the telecommunications market quickly with a broad portfolio of premium quality services for business customers.

''LMDS makes sense for emerging competitive service providers because the return on investment is fast and directly proportional to the number of customers signed up,'' said Jeannette Noyes, research manager, International Data Corporation (IDC). ''Newbridge designed its solution to be scalable so service providers can increase their infrastructure investments incrementally as their customer bases grow.''

''Newbridge delivers an end-to-end LMDS solution that enables us to enter the market quickly with the clear competitive advantages required to differentiate ourselves from the competition and the innovative financing necessary to support our network deployment and service roll out,'' said Russell Irvin, president, Gateway Telecom.

Gateway Telecom is the fourth U.S. LMDS licensee to select the Newbridge broadband wireless solution, following announcements with South Central Telcom, Home Telephone Inc. and Central Texas Communications. Newbridge has also announced it is supplying LMDS networks to Canadian nationwide spectrum holder MaxLink Communications Inc. and Korea Telecom, the world's eighth-largest telecommunications company.

The Newbridge LMDS solution has also been recognized with the Data Communications magazine Hot Product Award and the International Engineering Consortium (IEC) InfoVision award for its innovation, versatility and quantifiable customer benefits.

''Newbridge recognizes the strength of Gateway Telecom's business plan for its LMDS network deployment,'' said Conrad Lewis, executive vice president, Access Products Group, Newbridge Networks. ''The Newbridge LMDS solution provides the flexibility and scalability necessary for Gateway Telecom to move quickly on revenue-generating market opportunities.''

The comprehensive Newbridge broadband wireless solution for LMDS represents a multiservice network comprising base station and customer premise equipment. A base station, consisting of the industry leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch and point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects all traffic to and from customers within a given wireless coverage area. It is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone. Customer premise equipment includes transceivers and network interface units (NIUs), which support a full range of services. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager will manage both the wireless and wireline portions of the Gateway Telecom network, providing a full range of billing, statistics and maintenance support.
