BUSINESS WIRE - May 20, 1999 10:28
ANDOVER, MASS. (May 20) BUSINESS WIRE -May 20, 1999-- Farber Joins Neil Braun, Former President of NBC Television Network,

To Develop Next-Generation Internet Broadcast Company

CMGI Chairman and CEO David Wetherell and Neil Braun, President and CEO of ICast, today announced the appointment of Matthew Farber to the position of Executive Vice President and General Manager for ICast, the new, CMGI-funded Internet broadcast company.

Farber joins ICast from MTV Networks where he was most recently Executive Vice President, MTV Networks Online and General Manager for MTV2: MUSIC TELEVISION. In that position, Farber, who is credited with bringing MTV Networks into the online world, spearheaded the strategic planning, development and operations for MTV Online, VH1 Online, and the recently announced Buggles Project incorporating MTV Networks acquisition of Imagine Radio. In his concurrent position as General Manager of MTV2, Farber implemented MTV2's unique local and interactive programming, and managed the development and launch of five new digital music video channels from MTV and VH1. During his eight year tenure at MTV, Farber also created the MTV Radio Network and served as Vice President, Music Programming for MTV.

"Matt is a proven innovator and a gifted strategic manager," said Braun, "with a demonstrated ability to manage profitable, market-leading online brands. Matt's expertise and relationships in the entertainment arena are uniquely suited to our goal of developing a new breed of Internet broadcasting company that expands the limits of current multimedia technologies, while leveraging CMGI's strengths in content and community building. I look forward to working with him to bring consumers the very best online entertainment programming the Web can offer."

"Matt Farber represents just the latest addition to what is fast becoming the strongest, most progressive Internet broadcasting team now working on the Web. His programming skill and strong track record in creating Web entertainment channels for MTV, VH1 and M2 make him an ideal contributor to ICast," added Wetherell. "His enthusiasm in joining our senior management team supports our firm belief in what will undoubtedly be our boldest Internet venture yet."

Prior to joining MTV, Farber was director of strategic planning at Arista Records. An industry veteran with consulting, programming and marketing experience at numerous radio stations, Farber holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

Under the direction of Braun and Farber, ICast will provide consumers with a best-of-breed multimedia experience, leveraging the full array of digital and interactive media technologies now available. Moving beyond the model of existing Internet broadcast players, ICast will blend the best attributes of community, content, commerce and personal publishing with superior technology and production capabilities. Marshall -- thanks for posting the link to the Fool article. It expressed the usual cautions about internet speculation but was rather narrow in scope. And for the umpteenth time Wetherell is tweaked for rejecting the Lycos/USA deal despite selling Lycos shares in January for $52. You simply cannot equate a decision last January to create some liquidity to market conditions now. But the Wetherell critics seem determined to ride that hobby horse to death. And of COURSE anytime you have this kind of volatility in a stock or a sector the speculators come running. The market is home to all kinds of critters. Conditions are constantly changing, as the Fool Boys learned from their Iomega adventure. You didn't hear them complaining about speculators when Iomega was shooting upward at a fantastic rate. I don't think, however, that he correctly reads what Wetherell and CMGI are all about. True, one purpose of CMGI is to maximize share prices on companies seeded by the venture side. But CMGI is also building toward a group of operating companies that will be well-situated to capitalize on the full gamut of Internet opportunities. Those of us who plan to hold this stock for the next several years will do very well, I believe. Those who plan on reaping big profits short term by speculating on the stock will be riding the terrifying rollercoaster of volatility for some time to come. Some will win. Some will lose.
