Orion 2 Forming Transatlantic Satellite Net Connex May 20, 1999: 1:57 p.m. ET BEDMINSTER, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A. (NB) -- By Steve Gold, Newsbytes. NetSat Express plans to use capacity on Loral Skynet's Orion 2 satellite to carry Internet traffic between the US and Europe. The satellite, which will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, will be parked in a geostationary orbit of 12 degrees west, allowing the high-capacity satellite to carry a variety of transmissions from Europe, as far across as Russia, to both North and South America, as well as vice versa. Because the new satellite will have 38 Ku-band transponders on board, it can carry a significant volume of traffic, adding to the existing data transmission capacity of Orion 1, according to Terry Hart, Loral Skynet's president. "The unique trans-Atlantic configuration of the Orion 2 satellite is ideal for carrying Internet content from the US to Europe, the Middle East and South Africa," he said. Hart said as the use of the Internet grows in Europe and around the world, the firm is looking to route increasing volumes of Internet traffic across its satellite connections. The move to rent capacity on the Orion 2 satellite specifically is different since most Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecommunication carriers route their Internet traffic across what is commonly referred to as "dark fiber," or spare capacity on the world's telecommunications networks. This approach has left the carriers to choose whether to route the traffic across satellite or cable connections. Loral's Web site is at loral.com . NetSat Express' Web site is at netsatx.net .
