But 3dfx cards do have excellent image quality, especially in 2D, where TNT2 shows to have the same problems which TNT had: above 1024x768 they start to suck (anecdotal evidence, I still haven't seen one, but have heard this from several reviews now.)

BTW: FPS counts everywhere.

Go read some Falcon4 boards to see them fight for every last frame, just like the Quakers. Falcon4 looks wonderful on my V3, as does every other game I've played (including Quake3.)

Also, FPS games are driving 3D sales. No one is buying V3 or TNT2 to make Deer Hunter play faster. They buy these cards to get an edge in the online games. People with no 3D at all buy to get something. I think most of those are continuing to buy 3dfx cards.

Re: "RPG games, flight simulators,"

These are moving from 2D graphics to 3D graphics now. It is a good (debatable) point that RPG games usually don't benefit from high 3D frame rates but then they also don't use the features that nVIDIA is touting right now either. I could be wrong, but I'm not aware of a RPG title that uses large 32-bit textures or stencil buffers.

(BTW, nVIDIA is winning the FUD battle that equates < 32-bit color with "unusable". That is simply not the case however.)

Flight Simulators, on the other hand, do benefit tremendously from "high FPS" _if_ you remember that high FPS equates to the ability to run at higher resolutions. The Flight Sim guys are resolution junkies. (Still waiting for TRI's "Fly!") Of course the Driving Sim guys need all the frames they can get.

Re: "digital imaging and video editing programs, etc."
These use the 2D side of the card - not the 3D acceleration stuff. Not really an issue.

ST,
Interesting you mentioned flight sims, and RPGs. Considering the top selling games in their particular genre, the majority of them use GLIDE or software only. (i.e Diablo 2) I don't think you would compare the in game graphic quality like you do with photographs; if you do, then the games (RPG/SIMs/FPS) certainly have much more pressing problems.
