Lucent is trying its damnedest to spread FUD about Ciena. Case in point: at the precise time Ciena is set to announce earnings, Lucent announces that it won a DWDM contract. Does Lucent really believe it has to bury Ciena in order to compete for market share? Can anybody explain why Lucent thinks that they and Ciena cannot at least co-exist in the marketplace? It makes no sense to me.

Lucent gets DWDM contract from British Telecom

NEW YORK, May 20 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) said
on Thursday that British Telecommunications Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BT.L)
has selected it to be the main supplier of capacity-expanding technology for the British
telecom giant's core network.

Lucent, the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, did not say what the
expected value of the contract would be, and a spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

Lucent said it has already begun the installation on BT's network.

The contract follows a competitive bidding process, Lucent said, and a trial of its technology. The technology to be used,
dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM), multiplies capacity by splitting the light inside optical fibers into multiple
channels, each with the capacity of a full fiber.

DWDM was pioneered by Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq:CIEN - news), which is set to report earnings after the close of trading
today.

Lucent said it has the largest deployment of DWDM equipment worldwide, and 29 percent of the global market.

Its shares fell $1, to $58.8125, in trade Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.
