Easy, but how subtle. I, a city person, can hear the difference, but so many country-bred people don't. It is a subtle difference in what one can hear and how much of what one can hear at each tone point.

We tend to think of the senses as being off or on and as shutting off at certain points. We tend to forget the subtleties and shadings.
