Intel Launches Fastest Pentium III Chip, Cuts Prices
Full Coverage
Intel Releases Faster Pentium III Chip

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Reuters) - Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news), the world's largest chip maker, Monday slashed prices on existing Pentium III chips as it launched its most powerful Pentium III yet, one that will allow faster Web access to audio, video and three-dimensional graphics.

Intel unveiled a 550 megahertz version of the Pentium III, its newest family of chips initially launched at speeds of 450 and 500 megahertz.

Intel cut the price on the 450 megahertz model to $268 from $411 previously, a drop of 35 percent. It cut the price on its 500 megahertz model to $482, from $637 previously, a drop of 24 percent. The new chip is priced at $744. All prices are in quantities of 1,000.

Intel's latest price cuts provide further evidence of the manufacturing efficiencies that have allowed the company to apply more pressure on competitors like Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news)

PC makers ranging from Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news), Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news), Toshiba Corp. and others said they were using the 550 megahertz Pentium III chips in a range of high-end computers. Dell launched a Precision Workstation priced at $2,041, excluding the monitor.

The 550 megahertz chip also contains the new instruction set for the Pentium III to enable faster audio and video broadcasts over the Internet and speech recognition systems.

Separately, Intel also launched a new processor for the mobile market, a 366 megahertz Celeron chip, targeted to the low-cost PC market.

Intel's stock price should rocket, not Dell's.

Intel Portable Dazzles
By WILLIAM McCALL AP Business Writer

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - You may not be able to take a moon shuttle or spend a night in space like characters in the movie ''2001: A Space Odyssey,'' but the kind of thin computer pad they carried could be on shelves by the real 2001.

Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news), the world's largest chip maker, is testing a device about the size of an Etch-a-Sketch that taps into the Internet without a wire and can be passed around the house from husband to wife to kid to check the latest headlines, e-mail, stock quotes and even the school lunch menu.

''They'll have to come out here and pry it out of my hands,'' said Katherine Cowan, whose suburban Portland family recently tested a prototype that designers based loosely on the ''newspad'' in the classic 1968 movie.
