BT Awards Lucent Technologies Optical Networking Contract, and Names Lucent as a Main Supplier of Optical Equipment for Its Core Nationwide Network

Optical networking contract awarded following competitive trial of DWDM systems

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1999-- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced that it has been selected by BT as its a main supplier of high-capacity optical networking technology which will be key to the expansion of BT's core nationwide network.

The contract follows a competitive bidding tender and a successful trial of Lucent's dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. DWDM enables BT to increase the capacity its fibre-optic networks by transmitting information as different wavelengths/colours of light on the same fibre. The network expansion is part of BT's plan to meet increasing demands for its wholesale and retail data and voice services across the UK. Lucent has already begun installation, with the first stage of this network transmitting live traffic since January 1999. ''Lucent's DWDM system will enable us to meet the fast growing demand for voice and data services,'' said Ted Collins, transmission delivery manager within BT. ''Lucent's considerable experience in designing, building and managing high-capacity networks means we can offer our customers with the sophisticated, high-speed communications they demand.'' ''Lucent is delighted to have been named one of BT providers of optical networking systems, and we look forward continuing this successful relationship,'' said Frank Pipe, managing director of Lucent's global service provider group in the UK. ''Our DWDM systems allows BT to migrate to higher data transmission rates, whilst cost-effectively using their existing infrastructure.''

Under the agreement, Lucent will supply its WaveStar(tm) OLS 80G, a flexible 16-channel DWDM system, to expand BT's Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH)-based network. The company will also provide its ITM-SC network management technology, a centralised Network Element Management system for SDH and optical networks.

With approximately 2,000 optical line systems installed, Lucent has the largest deployment of DWDM equipment worldwide. And according to KMI Corporation's recent report for 1998, Lucent has the largest share -- 29 percent -- of the $2.2 billion global DWDM market. Lucent's research and development arm, Bell Labs introduced the world's first commercial DWDM systems in 1995 and holds over 1,600 patents in optical technology alone.

Lucent has announced contracts for its 16-channel systems with major customers around the world including KPN and WorldPort of the Netherlands, Telefonica of Spain, NETs of France, Bayernwerk of Germany, AT&T of the US, Alestra of Mexico, China's Ministry of Information Industries and Dacom of Korea.
