HDTV is a digital versus present analog format. Recording HDTV on an analog tape VCR gives you analog resolutions - yuk.

To preserve the HDTV resolution it must be recorded on digital devices with the appropriate bandwidth. Hence the demand for a digital video recorder.

Sure digital tape recorders would work but you wouldn't have the viewing options afforded by HDD's (ala Tivo et al).

Therefore - consumer acceptance of HDTV will be the key driver for consumer DVR demand, IMO. Until then, DVRs will serve narrow niche markets.
